Métal hurlant

Founded at the initiative of a few freedom-loving troublemakers, Métal Hurlant brought about a revolution in comic art in the mid-1970s, whose impact is still tangible half a century later.

In the joyful chaos that accompanied its birth, Jean-Pierre Dionnet, Philippe Druillet and Moebius launched the first version of this new magazine dedicated to Science Fiction, and co-founded a publishing house, “Les Humanoïdes Associés”. This first “rock’n’roll” chapter in the magazine’s life lasted between 1975 and 1987: an explosive hotbed of pop culture with a dose of rock, sci-fi and humour, Métal Hurlant published everything that matters and will continue to matter in the comic world, between the late 20th and early 21st century.

There have been subsequent episodes in the magazine’s life: between 2002 and 2004, and the latest version, since 2021, has succeeded in respecting the heritage of its predecessor, while revealing today’s talents. With over 400 stories and 16 issues already published, this new generation of writers continues to push back the boundaries of the imagination. As Yves Chaland affectionately wrote in his editorial for the final issue of 1987, it’s possible that “the name of the paper and those of its prestigious contributors will light up the galaxy for centuries and centuries”!

The exhibition at the Maison Folie Hospice d’Havré in the town of Tourcoing is reviving the creative fever of this unique adventure with Bruno Girveau, independent exhibition curator and comics aficionado, and the patronage of Jean-Pierre Dionnet and Les Humanoïdes Associés.

A complementary programme will include concerts, shows, round tables, workshops and meetings with artists strongly influenced by this artistic effervescence.
