The Musée de l’Hospice Comtesse will host The Distorted Party exhibition. Formerly a religious institution offering care and shelter to those in need, the venue is an ambivalent space, which is echoed in the themes of the exhibition: celebration and reflection, chaos and beauty, distortion and clarity.

The Distorted Party offers a rethinking of celebration and conviviality in the light of contemporary challenges: climate change, social inequality, political instability and persisting anxiety in a post-Covid world. These areas of doubtunderline the fragility of human existence and seem out of step with moments of celebration. The euphoria of these moments can lead to reflection or feelings of unease, shaping the surreal image of an underground party.

Beyond a historic sanctuary, the Hospice Comtesse becomes the canvas upon which the meanings of celebration are interwoven and renewed. The peaceful architecture of the space creates a stark contrast with the modern scenography and the exuberant, sometimes even disturbing energy of the artworks.

Siegrid Demyttenaere is the cofounder and co-editor of DAMN° magazine, she is also the magazine’s art director.
Sofie Lachaert is one half of the artistic duo behind the Lachaert Dhanis studio.
