By producing the first fun, immersive and original exhibition dedicated to raï music, the Institut du Monde Arabe-Tourcoing is paying a well-deserved and all-important tribute to this musical dynamic, which has transcended social, geographic and cultural barriers to become, over the course of the 20th century, a source of shared heritage.
Raï first developed in intimate family settings, during the early decades of the 20th century, in opposition to social and political constraints. It was recognised as part of humanity’s intangible cultural heritage in 2022, placing it back in the spotlight and reminding us that it has become one of the major forms of popular expression of our time.
