As part of Fiesta, 7ᵉ edition of lille3000, the Musée de Flandre is hosting a selection of photographs from Charles Fréger’s Charivari series. Installed on the museum’s terraces, this series focuses on satirical masquerades in Europe.
On display here are shots of carnivals in the north of France, between Belgium (Aalst, La Louvière, Telff, Stavelot, Malmedy, Eben-Emael, Fosse-la-Ville) and the Hauts-de-France region (Cassel, Bergues, Solesmes, Trélon).
The photographer captures the masked, costumed and sometimes unrecognisable figures involved in these popular rituals, which combine excess, reversal and collective celebration. Some of the images, taken in Cassel itself, underline the strong link between this region and the carnival traditions it perpetuates.
Charivari continues Charles Fréger’s work on collective identities, festive communities and symbolic figures.
