As part of Fiesta and at the invitation of Frac Picardie Hauts-de-France, Ulla von Brandenburg is taking over Le Colysée in Lambersart, in order to create a dialogue between her work and the work of artists in the Frac collection. The resulting juxtaposition of rival works put together with her collaborator Julia Mossé, co-curator and scenographer of the exhibition, were based – following a deliberate diversion from the Fiesta theme – on a subjective and fragmented idea of the carnival.
Rather than an exhibition on the carnival, it is actually the opposite, a show that takes carnival as a starting point, its forms of expression, practices and excesses. From the rich body of work held by the Frac Picardie – the only public collection built around contemporary drawing – and within the unique architecture of Le Colysée, Ulla von Brandenburg and Julia Mossé let themselves be guided by this carnivalesque framework, using free associations, purely visual or conceptual, to come up with four distinct groups: Reversal; Parade of colours and forms; Death, metamorphosis and derision; Double, between true and false.
